AQUPEC is a cross-linked acrylic water-soluble resin, which was developed based on high polymer technology Sumitomo Seika has accumulated over the years. AQUPEC shows excellent thickening effects even at low concentration by neutralizing with adequate alkalis. Unlike other soluble resin, this solution has thixotropic character as well.
AQUPEC is used for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and various other applications.

Dispersion and Neutralization

AQUPEC must be dispersed carefully in polar solvents such as water to prevent the formation of lumps. The following are effective methods of dispersing and neutralizing AQUPEC.

(a) Dispersion and neutralization in water

 1. Add powder slowly to water, while agitating to prevent formation of lumps.

   2. After all the AQUPEC is added, continue to agitate until a low viscosity fluid is formed (dispersion process).

   3. After the dispersion process, remove air bubbles, and continue agitating while adding the neutralizing agent.

       The solution will achieve viscosity immediately.

(b) Dispersion and neutralization in organic solvents

 For dispersion and neutralization in organic solvents, the selection of the neutralizing agent is critical. The use of the proper neutralizing agent will provide maximum thickening effects and exceptional atability.

 1) Dispersion in single-component solvents

 1. Disperse AQUPEC by adding powder to the solvent slowly, and agitating to prevent formation of lumps.

 2. Continue to agitate once a low viscosity fluid is formed, and add amine or amine solution to achieve immediate thickening.

2) Dispersion and neutralization in composite solvents

 1. Add AQUPEC to the solvent with the lowest polarity while agitating, so that the powder is diffused uniformly.

   2. Add the amine* to a higher-polarity solvent, then agitate the AQUPEC solution prepared in step 1 while adding the composite amine* solution to achieve immediate thickening.

   3. Use a 1:1 ratio of amine* to AQUPEC by weight as a guide, and adjust the pH by adjusting the ratio of amine* to AQUPEC.
