AQUPEC is a cross-linked acrylic water-soluble resin, which was developed based on high polymer technology Sumitomo Seika has accumulated over the years. AQUPEC shows excellent thickening effects even at low concentration by neutralizing with adequate alkalis. Unlike other soluble resin, this solution has thixotropic character as well.
AQUPEC is used for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and various other applications.

Dispersion and Neutralization

AQUPEC series for dispersion should be added carefully in polar solvents such as water to prevent the formation of lumps. Here are effective methods to disperse and neutralize AQUPEC.

(a) Dispersion and neutralization in water

  • Slowly add and mix powder to water to prevent lump formation.
  • Once AQUPEC is added, continue mixing until dissolved (dispersion process).
  • After the dispersion process, remove air bubbles and continue mixing while adding the neutralizing agent.
    The solution will reach its viscosity level immediately.

(b) Dispersion and neutralization in organic solvents

For dispersion and neutralization in organic solvents, the selection of the neutralizing agent is critical. The use of the proper neutralizing agent will provide maximum thickening effects and exceptional stability.

  1. Dispersion in single-component solvents
    1. Disperse AQUPEC by slowly adding powder to the solvent, and mixing the solution to prevent lump formation.
    2. Continue mixing once a low viscosity fluid is formed, then add the amine* or amine* solution to achieve immediate thickening.
  2. Dispersion and neutralization in composite solvents
    1. Add AQUPEC to the solvent with the lowest polarity while mixing, so that the powder is diffused uniformly.
    2. Add the amine* to a higher-polarity solvent, then mix the AQUPEC solution prepared in step 1 while adding the composite amine* solution to achieve immediate thickening.
    3. Use a 1:1 ratio of amine* to AQUPEC by weight as a guide.Adjust the pH by changing the ratio of amine* to AQUPEC.
